Prometrium vs. Provera

I have been on Prometrium for three days now.  At first I didn’t like them, they are bigger than provera and gave me a little headache.  However, now I like them.

I did a little research and found out that they are basically the same thing except that prometrium is natural progesterone while provera is synthetic.  A lot of women report that they do better with prometrium because it’s natural and the body can absorb it better, which means less side effects. I was a little confused since doctors prescribe it to women to get their periods and for women who are pregnant – totally different sides of the matter.  I knew that progesterone thickens your lining, but I learned that stopping  the pill is what brings on a period.  That is why women are put on it for ten days and then told to stop.  With women who are pregnant I figure after a certain amount of time they will be producing their own progesterone and don’t need the pills.

I have noticed it has one positive side effect for me – sex drive.  I have always had a low sex drive and I am pretty sure it has some sort of correlation with the fact that I have PCOS.  Anyways – the past two nights that I have taken my prometrium I have been in the mood.  I looked it up on the internet today and a lot of other women have reported it.  This is great for me.  The husband likes it too.  That got me to thinking about the progesterone suppositories my RE wants me to use once we do get to try and are possibly pregnant.  I wonder if it will have the same side effect.  I’m not sure though because I can’t imagine sticking stuff up there is that pleasant.  Anyone have increased sex drive while taking the suppositories?

I’m taking the vaginal suppositories right now and the last thing I want to do is have s.e.x.
Plus, the suppositories are very icky – you need to wear a pantyliner because you get a nasty, chunky discharge. I could not imagine actually having s.e.x. while using them.
Unfortunately my hubby does not like this 🙂

  2. i have to agree with ifcrossroads. i did the suppositories and definitely was never in the mood. but it could have been just how icky they were!!

Hi 🙂 I am a new reader of yours, and I left you an award on my blog!

I haven’t ever taken prometrium or provera, so I don’t really have any advice there. But I am a fellow clomid-ee (we’re on cycle #3), and I hope this one is successful!!

I’m about to start taking some Progesterone myself, and I’m not sure if I want synthetic or natural, but of course natural always seems better.

(And yes, totally stalking your blog! I have my infertility diary too). Hopefully things will start working out for you guys!

Obviously, I’m coming late to the commenting party on this one, but I found this post while searching for whether a headache during prometrium was normal. Evidently, lots of people report a headache with it, so that makes me feel a little better.

Anyway, I haven’t had any detectable change in sex drive while taking the prometrium. Of course, mine’s pretty high to begin with. lol

So I am doing the vaginal sup … The key to controlling the mess is get it up there as far as you can and stay on your back for 15-20 minutes before getting up … Def wear a light liner! I also bought wet ones to keep next to my bed you know to “clean” up. I was freaking out about doing the supp, but it is not bad!
Now onto the next subject … My first iui i had no sex drive because i was nervous and it was all new to us. But we are in our 2ww from our second iui and my sex drive is high. I am not sure if it just different every month or what.

    • Glad you are finding that the suppositories aren’t as bad as you thought. Good luck with your 2ww!
